JUROR STATEMENT-Glenn Williams is this year’s juror and is a native of St. Louis, MO. He received his M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an emphasis in Sculpture. After completing his degree, he was invited to join the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Northwest Missouri State University where he served as the Sculpture Area Head from 2003-2017. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Art and head of the Sculpture Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
ABOUT the 2018 JUROR-First and foremost, I want to thank all the artists who submitted works for consideration for the 2018 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. It was refreshing seeing the diversity of practices occurring in contemporary outdoor sculpture. In selecting works for this year’s exhibition I was looking to include artists whose works not only exhibited a technical proficiency and a profound understanding of their materials, but also provide the audience with an unfiltered view into their visual language. It has truly been my pleasure to select the works, from such a talented group of artist, to be on display for the 2018 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition.
”In my work I explore various social constructs. I deconstruct, reconstruct and sometimes simply reflect various accepted mores in an effort to expose and on occasion question their impact on varying social realities. I am interested in how these constructs shape our understanding of the world around us as well as influence our human interactions on a social, political, and environmental level. I am also intrigued by how slight interruptions or uncalculated variables in these perceived societal rules can cause us to take pause and pay closer attention to, or in some instances reassess, our accepted value systems.”
