Caterpillars With Character, a distinctive exhibit by Kelly Hughes of Jackson, Mo., will be the focus of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri’s First Friday With The Arts this Friday, Aug. 7.
“I am fascinated by the diversity and conspicuous design of these elusive creatures,” said Hughes, a nature center volunteer. “The bold colors, the formidable horns and spines and the intricate patters interest me. I knew I would enjoy becoming acquainted with these characters.”
Many of the colorful creatures showcased in Hughes’ collection are common to this region of Southeast Missouri.
The collection to be displayed in the Arts Council’s Gallery 100 includes depictions of 20 unique species of caterpillars found in an array of sizes, colors and patterns. Prints and note-cards from Hughes collection also will be available for sale throughout the exhibit which runs until Aug. 31.
Also on display during the month of August in the Art’s Council’s Lorimier Gallery are works from the Summer Art Academy held recently at Southeast Missouri State University. The Chapman Gallery will feature works by local Artist Co-Op members.
First Friday reception food is provided by Ray’s of Kelso and wine is provided courtesy of Major Brands.
The Arts Council, located at 32 N. Main Street, is also a stop for the free First Friday Around Town shuttle, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
