In 2016, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is undertaking a big transition – a move to a new, permanent location! Keep an eye on the Building Blog for pictures, plans, excitement, and dates as we change locations and open up new opportunities.

July 7th, 2016 - Home Sweet Spanish Street!

We made it home! The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri officially moved into 16 N. Spanish Street on Friday, July 1st.  You might be thinking, "Friday the 1st - was that not the same day as July's First Friday with the Arts?" why yes it was! Everyone kicked it into gear moving from 32 N. Main Street on Wednesday, June 29th and into 16 N. Spanish Street in preparation for both the Arts Council and Visual Arts Cooperative's galleries to open in time for July's First Friday opening reception.  A huge round of applause is in order for the Arts Council's staff and board members along with the Visual Arts Cooperative's members for the long hours and hard work that associates itself with a move.

Also, a huge thank you is extended to all of our devoted First Friday attendees and to Chris Wilson for making the atmosphere of the soft-opening even more exciting with his live performances on the marimba.  We welcomed around 350 attendees to our first First Friday at 16 N. Spanish Street!

Though we are officially moved in there is still minimal work to be done, such as getting the four classroom/workshop spaces ready for occupants! We will keep you updated on when those spaces will be available for use and how you can use the spaces for your own creative ventures.

Come see our new home for yourself, it's even better in person.  Gallery hours remain the same, Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 4pm.  See you soon!

April 12, 2016 - Framework, Sheetrock, and Many Photos!

With a big move like this, we need a steady hand for photography meant to last. Luckily, photographer and member Timothy Buerck has stepped up and graciously offered to take in-progress photographs for us! So far, he has taken two trips over to the new building on March 29th and April 8th to capture some detail shots of the work in progress. We’ve shared a few here, but we are so in love with them we needed to share them all! Visit our Facebook page to take a look at the Building Blog Photo Album!

These few photographs above are from March 29th, see if you can spot the progress between the dates below!

March 15, 2016 - Progress Has Been Made!

First Fridays are always a big deal at the Arts Council, but during this March’s First Friday we received an extra bit of good news. The plans for our new building were approved by the city! Since then, our contractor has been hard at work. Much of it includes practical details that may not photograph well, but there are a few things we can’t help but swoon over.

First, take a look at these floors! When we popped in to the building to snap pictures last week, they were in the process of polishing our concrete floors. The picture below shows the difference between the concrete before and after. Can you picture seeing this throughout the entire gallery space? Beautiful! The concrete floors are one of the details we are most excited about. Not only do they capture the varying details of the old concrete, they will be extraordinarily practical for our workshop areas. A little spilled paint? No worries, easy to clean!

Necessary details, like doors, can add as much interest in addition to our artwork! Check out these (slightly hidden) doors, which will add some extra industrial aesthetic. The left door will be the sliding door that separates our two gallery spaces, which will be kept open during the day. The right door will be in one of our workshops. Keep an eye out to learn more about this themed-workshop area in the coming months!

Can you spot the other new feature? This is the framework for the dance studio! You can also see the shine on the polished sections of the concrete floor, finished in the framed section. Can you picture these rooms finished and filled with dancing On Cue Performing Arts Studio students? We can, and we are so excited to see our new home beginning to come together!

January 13, 2016 - A New Home Revealed!

A couple of years ago, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri Board set up a Building Committee to look into what the future of our organization might hold. Last year, the committee finally discovered the perfect fit and in late December we closed on 16 North Spanish Street! The present plan is to have a soft opening in May 2016 and a Grand Opening in September 2016.

Our current location on Main Street has served us well for almost 14 years, and we hope our new home will help us continue to grow and accomplish our mission of providing a forum for residents of the Southeast Missouri region to explore, experience, and share in the diversity and excitement of the arts.

Over the next year, details of the space and photographs of the progress will be shared here (as well as one or two volunteer requests for help moving)! Your support has gotten us to this point, and we want to include you as partners moving forward.

For now, enjoy this peek at the blank canvas of our upcoming Spanish Street home:
