Public Art is for Everyone! Cape Girardeau is home to both permanent and temporary pieces of public art including murals, mosaics, and sculpture! The growing support for art in public spaces has been evident since the City of Cape Girardeau established the Public Art Program on City property in 2012. A Public Art Committee was then formed including artists and representatives from the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Old Town Cape, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Cape Girardeau.
The Public Art Policy and Procedures was developed throughout the fall of 2011 and the winter and spring of 2012, and outlines the following: Long & Short Term Goals of the Public Art Program, the Public Art Authority and Administration, the Public Art Designation Policy, the Public Art Funding Policy, De-accession Policy, Education and Outreach, and Promotion in detail.

A compilation of over 100 pieces of public art in Cape Girardeau Missouri was created as part of the Public Art Program in 2012, initiated to make the public more aware of the artwork that surrounds them on a daily basis. Whether you are a true local or a new tourist, reading through the booklet is a sure way to enrich your understanding of the arts and history of Cape Girardeau.
