ARTS COUNCIL OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI PRESENTS
Jean Rissover's Distaff: the Lives of Women

Arts Council of Southeast Missouri hosted an opening reception for Jean Rissover's Distaff: the Lives of Women on First Friday, March 1, from 5-9 PM. Rissover began her painting career in 2011 at age 70, after careers in teaching, social work, and journalism. It was her first real effort to create art since her senior year at a high school in suburban St. Louis. Since 2011 she has had opportunities to be instructed by notable regional artists and has won several awards. Rissover's work is also on display at •E•KleK•Tix, her studio and gallery located in Ste. Genevieve's historic downtown. Most of her paintings portray the everyday lives of women: their activities, experiences, relationships, joys, sorrows and moods. Each is unique, and at the same time, represents a component of “the feminine.” The artist's intended message is simple: Women’s lives are diverse, rich and complex. Most important, the lives of all women are worthy of attention. Distaff: the Lives of Women will be on display until Saturday, March 30, 2019.

Arts Council of Southeast Missouri also hosted an open moderated conversation with Jean Rissover, Thursday, March 21, 6-7 PM. All were invited to join the artist as she answered questions regarding her work and life. This conversation was moderated by Dr. Joni Hand, Associate Professor of Art History at Southeast Missouri State University. The conversation was also open for attendees to ask their own questions of the artist. Thank you to our audience who participated, Dr. Joni Hand for moderating, and Jean Rissover for her time and willingness to answer questions. For those who were unable to attend, videos of the Artist Conversation with Jean Rissover are posted below.

We invite you to view her work at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri throughout March. Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is located at 16B N. Spanish Street in downtown Cape Girardeau and open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 AM-6 PM.
