The human instinct towards beauty intrigues me. Across time and place, we see manifested the desire to adorn and enhance our homes, our bodies, our rituals, the objects around us, and on and on. The related human impulse to make likewise fascinates me. The generative act of creating sometimes feels like the moment when we are most alive, most human. This intersection of the desire for making and the desire for beauty is where I locate this show.

The abundance of and within the works submitted made the selection choices both difficult and delightful. I enjoyed savoring the variety of works... such an array of media, style, and content. Clearly the passion and joy of each maker was present. In selecting the works, my choices relied on adeptness in handling the media, unique vision of the maker, and the spark of delight, as well as celebrating makers at different points in their artist journey.

Thank you to Angela Sander and the Arts Council for inviting me to jury this year’s Regional Exhibition. Many thanks to the artists who submitted work – thank you for sharing a piece of yourself.

- Jennifer Higerd
